ed essere duro d'orecchi
significa abitare in una Galleria degli Specchi
ed essere miopi
significa fare lunghi viaggi per tornare a casa
e trovare un AFFITTASI nel giardinetto d'ingresso

significa ascoltare dalla finestra
e guardare nella cornetta del telefono,
a una pagina affilata parlare con le mani
uscite da scuola una lezione sola prima della fine

significa ricordarsi dei passeri
nel Parco Ornitologico
e della rana pescatrice
nel Mondo Marino

significa essere altrove o altro
in diecimila conversazioni
ritornando con un legnetto in bocca
e un'aria speranzosa
scodinzolando scuse.

and be hard of hearing
is to inhabit a Hall of Mirrors
and be short-sighted
is to make a long trip home
and find a TO LET sign on the front lawn

is to be listening through the window
peering into the telephone receiver

talking to a sharp page with hands
that left school just one lesson too early

is to be remembering sparrow
in Bird Life Park
a toad-fish
at Sea-World

is to be elsewhere or other
in ten thousand conversations
returning with gripped sticks in one's jaws
a hopeful look
and a tail wagging excuses.
